Worldschool Ambassadors Program
In 2007 Worldschool started cooperating with a group of ISS students – international students from developing countries who are doing their Masters at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. Two years later, in 2009, they were joined by students from the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) in Rotterdam. Both institutes are linked to Erasmus University Rotterdam.
The international students share their knowledge and expertise to Worldschool students who are busy doing their research. Assignments come from development organisations in countries like Uganda, Nepal, Kenya, Ghana, Mexico or Philippines, countries that most of the Worldschool students have never visited. So being able to talk to someone from one of those countries and perhaps even meeting him/her, is really an advantage when working on assignment.
After finishing their Masters and having spent one year up to fifteen months in the Netherlands, the international students return to their home countries. Worldschool thought of a way to keep in touch with them and developed the Worldschool Ambassadors program. A program that is both in the interest of Worldschool as well as the international students.
A Worldschool Ambassador has a few different tasks:
1)represent Worldschool and the vision behind Worldschool;
2)connect Worldschool to interesting and interested possible partners (such as schools or civil society networks)
3)identify projects with CRD assignments for Worldschool students
4)be a contact person/ local representative for own project
5)answer questions from Worldschool students
To qualify as a Worldschool ambassador, students need to act as the voice of the people and transmit their sounds. They are ACID! Accessible, committed, integer and dedicated. They need to have networking skills and a network on local, regional and international level. Communication is essential, and in their communication they want to be responsible and representative. Ambassadors need to walk the talk, and practice what they preach.
On September 2, 2010, the first Worldschool Ambassadors training took place. Trained by Berry van den Bos from Theaterlokaal, and with guidance from Marenne Mei Jansen, the students discussed about active citizenship, local development and international education. At the end of this inspiring session a group of 8 students received the official Worldschool Ambassadors certificate. Worldschool is proud to have Shagota Haque (Bangladesh), Jimmy Baluku (Uganda), Niki ke Li (China), Luna Bajracharya (Nepal), Xinyi Li (China), Patricia Musengya Makau (Kenya), Yatra Sharma (Nepal) and Joel Abumere Idaye (Nigeria) as the first group of Worldschool Ambassadors. Later on Albert Mwesigwa (Uganda) joined the group.
